Australia and England have emerged as early frontrunners, securing the top positions on the WTC table. Both teams have displayed exceptional form, achieving a perfect points percentage of 100 after winning their respective opening matches.

Sri Lanka currently holds the third position after concluding their two-match series against Bangladesh with a victory and a draw. Bangladesh follows in fourth place, with a draw and a loss in their record.

Meanwhile, prominent teams such as South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan are yet to commence their WTC campaigns, leaving anticipation high for their entry into the competition.

India's start to the WTC cycle faced challenges, despite a commendable effort in their opening match at Headingley. Despite having five centurions, the team suffered a loss as England orchestrated a remarkable chase to take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Chasing a target of 371, England's success was fueled by a strong opening partnership between Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley, while Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith guided the chase with an unbeaten stand. India's middle-order collapse and missed catching opportunities proved detrimental to their chances.

Following the match, Gill acknowledged India's missed opportunities and highlighted the lack of runs from the lower order as a contributing factor to their defeat.

India is now redirecting their focus towards the second Test at Edgbaston, where they aim to rebound and revitalize their WTC campaign. Currently, they are positioned near the bottom of the table, alongside West Indies.

The current WTC cycle commenced with Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh on June 17 and is scheduled to culminate in the final in 2027.
