Prabath Jayasuriya's exceptional spin bowling propelled Sri Lanka to a decisive innings-and-78-run victory over Bangladesh in the second Test held in Colombo. This triumph secured a 1-0 series win for the home side.
Prabath Jayasuriya celebrates claiming his 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Bangladesh began the fourth day at 115 for six, still trailing by 97 runs. They needed a remarkable turnaround to salvage the match. However, Sri Lanka swiftly extinguished any hopes of a fightback.
Jayasuriya, who was wicketless in the first innings, made an immediate impact. He dismissed Litton Das for 14 with the fifth ball of the morning, courtesy of a catch behind to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis. This key wicket triggered a rapid collapse, leading to a swift victory for Sri Lanka before the lunch break.
This comprehensive victory not only clinched the series but also significantly boosted Sri Lanka's points in the World Test Championship standings.
The focus now shifts to the limited-overs segment of the tour, featuring three ODIs and three T20Is.
The win in Colombo was a stark contrast to the drawn first Test in Galle, where Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto shone with centuries in both innings. Unfortunately for the visitors, they couldn't replicate that performance in the second Test, with no batsman managing to reach a half-century in either innings.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat on a seemingly favorable pitch, Bangladesh failed to capitalize, getting bowled out for 247 in their first innings. Sri Lanka responded strongly with a total of 458, establishing a significant 211-run lead.
Opener Pathum Nissanka anchored the Sri Lanka innings with a fluent 158 – his second century of the series. Dinesh Chandimal provided valuable support with a composed 93. Their 194-run partnership for the second wicket laid the foundation for Sri Lanka's dominance.
Although Bangladesh briefly fought back with three quick wickets after taking the second new ball, Kusal Mendis stabilized the innings with a counterattacking 84, ensuring that the home side remained in control.
Overall, it was a clinical performance by Sri Lanka, who outplayed Bangladesh in all aspects of the game to secure a well-deserved series victory on their home turf.
