Chopra Identifies Cricketer With Javelin Potential

Neeraj Chopra, India's Olympic javelin champion, has made a surprising pick for a cricketer who could potentially dominate in javelin throw. During a recent segment on Star Sports, hosted by Navjot Singh Sidhu, Chopra identified Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian cricket team's fast bowler, as someone with the right attributes to excel in the sport.

Neeraj Chopra discusses Jasprit Bumrah's athletic potential.

Chopra's assessment is based on the inherent physical attributes and techniques that fast bowlers develop. He specifically highlighted Bumrah's exceptional fitness and strength as key factors that would make him a suitable javelin thrower, had he not already achieved prominence in cricket.

"I think it would be a fast bowler for sure. So, I think a fully fit Jasprit Bumrah will be good at it," Chopra stated, emphasizing Bumrah's athletic capabilities.

Bumrah's recent cricketing performances underscore his physical prowess. In the first Test match against England, he achieved his 14th five-wicket haul, showcasing his bowling talent.

Despite Bumrah's efforts, England won the match, chasing a target of 371 runs. This victory provided England with a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series. Bumrah's statistics in 2024 are remarkable, with 78 wickets in just 15 Test matches, the highest among fast bowlers globally during this period.

His workload is also noteworthy, having bowled 410.4 overs, surpassing other leading pace bowlers like Australia's Mitchell Starc (362.3 overs) and England's Gus Atkinson (328 overs).

Among Indian bowlers, only Ravindra Jadeja has exceeded 400 overs, bowling 400.1 overs, while Mohammed Siraj, despite playing the same number of matches as Bumrah, has bowled 355.3 overs.

Due to workload management considerations, Bumrah is expected to be rested for the upcoming Test at Edgbaston. Siraj is likely to lead the pace attack, despite his performance in the previous Test.

The second Test of the series is scheduled to commence on July 2 in Birmingham, where India aims to level the series against England.

This discussion about Bumrah's potential in javelin throw highlights the interesting crossover of athletic abilities between cricket and track and field. It underscores the physical similarities between fast bowling and javelin throwing.

The comments were made in promotion of the Neeraj Chopra Classic javelin throw event on July 5.
