Jasprit Bumrah immediately commanded attention upon entering the Edgbaston Cricket Ground nets. The Indian pace spearhead wasted no time, swiftly transitioning into his rhythm. His signature shoulder click signaled his readiness for an intense bowling spell.
After a brief warm-up, the measuring tape was brought out to mark his run-up, indicating a planned 20-minute burst at full throttle. With several key batsmen absent from the session, Bumrah focused his efforts on challenging Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Karun Nair.
Bumrah showcased his versatility, beating batsmen with ease, testing their technique with pinpoint accuracy, and keeping them guessing with varied angles. He expertly utilized the crease, bowling around the wicket to left-handers and exploiting the width for right-handers. More importantly, he appeared refreshed, suggesting that the three-day break from bowling had rejuvenated the 31-year-old pacer. He bowled alongside Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
The trio of Bumrah, Siraj, and Krishna, who all featured in the Headingley Test, demonstrated purpose during the second day of practice in Birmingham. Each bowler put in around thirty minutes of work before focusing on batting in the nets. Siraj dedicated his batting practice to perfecting leaves, ducks, and forward defenses with the guidance of batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. Bumrah, on the other hand, sampled a variety of bowling styles, from side-armers to slow bowlers, maintaining unwavering focus throughout his extended session.
Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja continued his batting practice, while Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep continued to impress. The inclusion of either Akash or Arshdeep in the playing XI hinges on Bumrah's availability. Kuldeep Yadav, however, is leaving no stone unturned in his preparation.
The chinaman bowler dedicated time to both batting and bowling, actively seeking feedback from the support staff and teammates. Yadav displayed a willingness to experiment with angles and lengths. The dry conditions in Birmingham might influence the team management to consider him for the second Test.
Kuldeep's efforts extend beyond his bowling. He has been diligently working on his batting skills under the watchful eyes of head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. For the past year and a half, Kuldeep has been committed to improving his batting and contributing meaningfully to the team with the bat.
After two days of intense practice, the team took a break and will reconvene on June 30th. The bowlers have earned a period of rest. The suspense surrounding Bumrah's participation will continue for at least 48 hours.
