Former England captain Nasser Hussain has shared his thoughts on Jofra Archer's inclusion in England's Test squad, describing it as "a gamble worth taking." However, he also urged caution regarding his immediate inclusion in the playing XI for the crucial second Test against India at Edgbaston.
Archer, whose last Test appearance was in February 2021, has been named in the squad for the second Test, which starts on July 2nd. The 30-year-old has been plagued by persistent elbow and back injuries, but recently made his return to red-ball cricket for Sussex, bowling 18 overs against Durham and taking 1/32.
Hussain, speaking to Sky Sports, acknowledged the challenges Archer has faced: "Firstly, it's great news for Archer and England. Jofra has endured a lot with those injuries, the rehab, the pain, and the mental challenge of repeated injuries and comebacks. It's fantastic to see him back in the squad, especially considering he hasn't played a Test match in four years."
However, Hussain advised against rushing Archer into the lineup for Edgbaston. "I think it's too risky this week. It might have gone exceptionally well – I'm not inside Jofra Archer's body – and they might decide to play him this week. But then the question becomes: who do you leave out?"
Despite these reservations, Hussain remains optimistic about the potential long-term benefits of Archer's return. "I still believe it's a gamble worth taking, though I'm unsure if this week is the right time. I'd consider it more strongly a week later at Lord's."
England currently lead the five-match series 1-0 after their five-wicket victory at Leeds. The rest of the squad remains unchanged for Edgbaston.
