Kuldeep Yadav's Inclusion in Second Test Gains Momentum Amidst England Series
As India prepares for the second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on July 2, questions abound regarding team composition and strategy. Following a defeat in the first Test, discussions are rife about potential changes to the playing XI, including the possible inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav.
One major point of contention revolves around Jasprit Bumrah's participation. The Indian team management has indicated that Bumrah's workload will be carefully managed, limiting him to just three of the five Tests due to his injury history. While he showcased his prowess with a five-wicket haul in the first innings of the Leeds Test, he remained wicketless in the second, raising questions about his consistency and workload.
The exclusion of Kuldeep Yadav from the first Test sparked considerable debate. However, after the loss, his inclusion in the second Test is now being seriously considered, particularly given the expectation that the Edgbaston pitch will favor spin bowlers.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar emphasized the potential effectiveness of Kuldeep's wrist spin against the England batsmen. "The team will have to give some thought to how we can bring Kuldeep Yadav into the XI," Bangar stated. "Judging by the approach we saw from the England batters in the first Test, Kuldeep—who bowls wrist spin—could be effective. Historically, England’s batters haven’t played wrist spin particularly well. So that is definitely something worth considering."
Subramaniam Badrinath, another former Indian batter, suggests even bolder changes. He believes India should include both Kuldeep and pacer Arshdeep Singh for the Edgbaston Test.
"I think one change could be replacing Shardul—I’d definitely look to include a bowler," Badrinath explained. "And maybe instead of Prasidh Krishna, I’d look to add some variety. So probably, my changes would be Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav coming into the XI. But then again, the final XI will depend on the conditions."
The five-match Test series began with England's victory at Headingley, Leeds. The schedule for the remaining Tests is as follows:
This series is a part of the World Test Championship cycle.
