The India-Pakistan cricket rivalry is legendary, igniting unparalleled passion in fans and players. Indian captain Rohit Sharma, a veteran of numerous high-pressure encounters, recently shared insights into the unique atmosphere surrounding these matches.

Sharma recalled the recent T20 World Cup 2024 showdown, describing the pre-match build-up as nothing short of a festival, extending from the team hotel to the stadium. India ultimately triumphed by six runs in a low-scoring nail-biter, with Jasprit Bumrah earning the Player of the Match award for his impressive figures of 3-14.
"Before the India vs Pakistan match, we were informed of a potential threat, which restricted us from leaving the hotel for two days leading up to the game. The atmosphere was electric. The hotel was buzzing with fans and media, making it clear that this was more than just another match – it was something extraordinary," Sharma revealed.
He continued, "Approaching the stadium felt like entering a celebration, with Indian and Pakistani fans dancing and enjoying the moment together. While I've played countless India-Pakistan games, the pre-match energy is always exceptional and unmatched."
During the match, India faced early setbacks with the dismissals of Virat Kohli (4), Rohit (13), and Axar Patel (20). However, Rishabh Pant delivered a crucial innings, scoring 42 off 31 balls, including six boundaries, propelling the team to a respectable total of 119 after the middle order faltered.
Sharma lauded Pant's performance, stating that the wicketkeeper-batter played to his full potential and kept India in the game on a challenging pitch.
"We encouraged Rishabh to play his natural game – to disrupt the bowlers and play with freedom, which he executed perfectly. His innings of around 42 was equivalent to a score of 70 on that difficult surface, where something was constantly happening," Sharma explained.
He added, "We aimed for a par score of around 130 or 140, but we lost wickets along the way, leading to Rishabh's vital knock of 40-plus, which stabilized the innings. Despite ending up with 119, I believed it could still be a defendable score. I knew that if we could take 2-3 early wickets with the new ball, 119 would feel like 160."
Sharma also praised the pace bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh for their successful defense of the total, highlighting their value in the T20 format.
“With Bumrah, a proactive approach is essential. He's a genuine wicket-taker who also contains runs effectively. The key is to strike the right balance, particularly when the opposition aims for a run-a-ball chase. Arshdeep has also been outstanding. There’s a reason he’s become India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is over the past two years – he's a highly intelligent bowler,” Sharma said.
"My focus was on strategically utilizing their remaining overs, considering the incoming batters and their potential to handle Arshdeep and Bumrah. Given the challenging pitch conditions for new batters, our strategy was to force fresh faces to the crease," Rohit concluded.
