Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, is set to open source its Grok chatbot this week, furthering Musk's vision of democratizing artificial intelligence. This move follows Musk's consistent criticism of OpenAI for allegedly straying from its original mission of developing AI for the betterment of humanity, instead prioritizing profit.
Musk announced the decision via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "This week, @xAI will open source Grok."
Open-sourcing a software like Grok grants universal access to its source code, enabling redistribution and modification. A key advantage of this approach is the enhanced flexibility it offers to organizations, empowering them to explore diverse solutions independently, rather than relying solely on internal teams.
Musk has been a vocal proponent of open-source AI, emphasizing its importance for widespread accessibility and innovation.
The announcement was met with mixed reactions. When a user suggested that OpenAI should follow suit and open-source their models, Musk responded with a blunt, "OpenAI is a lie." This statement underscores his belief that OpenAI has deviated from its initial open and collaborative principles.
Musk's commitment to open-source AI is not new. During a podcast with Lex Fridman in November of last year, he expressed his strong inclination towards open sourcing, stating, "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing."
This announcement comes after xAI's release of Grok, which was reportedly built in just four months. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, responded with a sarcastic post implying that Grok could be built with a single prompt using GPT Builder, highlighting the efficiency of OpenAI's tools.
Musk retorted with a pointed remark, stating, "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine.”
