Rishabh Pant, the dynamic Indian wicketkeeper-batter, stands on the verge of joining a prestigious group of international cricketers. As India prepares for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, starting July 2nd, Pant has the opportunity to achieve a remarkable feat.
Following his impressive performance at Headingley, where he scored twin centuries, the 26-year-old is just one century away from becoming part of an elite list that includes legends like Don Bradman, Rahul Dravid, and Brian Lara.
In the first Test at Leeds, Pant showcased his aggressive batting style by smashing 134 and 118 runs. Despite India's five-wicket defeat after setting a target of 371, Pant's audacious stroke-making and resilience were a major highlight.
To date, he has accumulated 808 runs in 10 Tests in England, averaging 42.52 with four centuries. Notably, his highest score on English soil, a blistering 146 off 111 balls, was achieved at Edgbaston in 2022. This innings was crucial in rescuing India from a precarious 98 for 5, ultimately helping them reach a first-innings total of 416. Although India lost the match, Pant's innings remains one of the finest by an Indian wicketkeeper on foreign soil.
If Pant manages to score another century at Edgbaston, he will become only the seventh visiting batter to achieve the distinction of scoring centuries in three consecutive Tests in England. The select group includes Don Bradman, Warren Bardsley, Charles Macartney, Brian Lara, Rahul Dravid, and Daryl Mitchell. Rahul Dravid is currently the only Indian player on this list, having accomplished the feat in 2002.
Rishabh Pant, already holding records for the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper and the most runs by an Asian wicketkeeper in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries, has a golden opportunity to further solidify his place in cricket history.
