Following India's defeat to England, Sunil Gavaskar suggested that spinner Kuldeep Yadav should replace Shardul Thakur for the Birmingham Test, anticipating favorable conditions for wrist spin. Gavaskar also expressed concerns about the middle order, particularly Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair after their dismissals.

Gavaskar Advocates for Kuldeep Yadav's Inclusion in Second Test Against England

Following India's recent defeat against England, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has suggested significant changes to the team's lineup for the upcoming second Test in Birmingham. Gavaskar emphasized the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, a wrist-spin bowler, in place of Shardul Thakur.

Gavaskar, speaking on Tuesday, stated that the Birmingham pitch conditions are expected to favor wrist spin. "Whether Jasprit Bumrah is fit or not, I think Kuldeep Yadav has to come into the team. I do believe that he should come into the team for Shardul Thakur because the Birmingham pitch will be one where there will be just a little bit of help for the wrist spinner," he said.

Thakur's performance in the previous Test was underwhelming. He bowled only six overs in the first innings, conceding 38 runs without taking a wicket. His contribution with the bat was also minimal, scoring just five runs across both innings. Despite briefly taking two wickets in the second innings, Gavaskar believes his overall performance was not convincing enough to retain his place in the team.

Kuldeep Yadav has only played one Test in England, back in 2018 at Lord's, where he didn't manage to take any wickets. However, Gavaskar believes that Kuldeep's variations could be crucial in the upcoming Test match in Birmingham.

Gavaskar also addressed the concerns surrounding the middle order, particularly the performance of debutants Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, who were both dismissed for ducks in the first innings. This collapse led to India being all out for 471 after a strong start at 430/3.

While Gavaskar isn't advocating for their immediate removal from the team, he hinted at a potential reshuffle if India falls 0-2 down in the series.

"If things don't go well in the second Test, maybe Sai (Sudharsan) and Karun (Nair). I don't want to drop them at the moment. Then I'd also look at Washington (Sundar), so that it really gives you a more solid batting, and also get a little more variety as far the bowling is concerned," he explained.

Following their defeat at Headingley, India will aim to level the series when they face England at Edgbaston, starting on July 2.
