Just days after being dismissed as "crap" by Australian cricketing legend Ian Healy, West Indies' Shamar Joseph delivered a compelling response, claiming 4 wickets for 46 runs in the first innings of the first Test against Australia. His performance included a particularly impressive dismissal, proving his mettle on the field.
Healy's pre-match criticism, aired on SEN radio, targeted Joseph's on-field warning to Sam Konstas during their first Test match. Healy stated, "OK Shamar, well you've delivered crap all year...So he better improve, that's what I'm saying. He's got real trouble. You're not Curtly Ambrose, champ."
However, Joseph let his performance do the talking. On the opening day in Bridgetown, as 14 wickets tumbled, Joseph accounted for four, including the prized wicket of Konstas.
The dismissal of Konstas was particularly significant. An appeal for leg before wicket was initially turned down, but a review confirmed the ball was destined to hit the leg stump. This crucial breakthrough gave the West Indies an early advantage.
Joseph's efforts contributed to Australia being bowled out for a modest 180 runs. Jayden Seales also played a key role, complementing Joseph's impressive spell.
Despite Joseph's heroics, the West Indies struggled to capitalize, ending the day at 57/4.
This Test series marks Australia's first tour to the West Indies since 2015.
This isn't the first time Joseph has troubled the Australian batsmen. Earlier this year, in only his second Test, he claimed six wickets in a remarkable 10-over spell, contributing to Australia's failure to chase down a target of 216.
He finished with figures of 7/68 in that match, securing an 8-run victory for the West Indies at the Gabba – their first win on Australian soil in 27 years.
