Following India's emphatic 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston, which leveled the five-Test series at 1-1, former England bowler Stuart Broad has issued a stern warning to the home side. As the teams prepare for the third Test at Lord’s, Broad highlighted the potency of the Indian bowling attack, suggesting it could pose a significant threat to the England batting lineup.
"This Indian bowling attack would worry me if I was in that England batting lineup," Broad stated during a Sky Sports panel discussion. He emphasized the unique challenges of bowling at Lord’s, noting, "The ball just nips down that slope at Lord’s. Akash Deep brings the stumps into play, and if it swings, Bumrah will be lethal with the late movement."
The Shubman Gill-led Indian team, buoyed by their historic win at Edgbaston, appears confident and settled. Gill's impressive performance with the bat, scoring a total of 430 runs, coupled with Akash Deep's remarkable 10-wicket haul in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, has strengthened their position.
With Bumrah expected to return for the third Test, speculation is rife about the team combination. Former England captain Mark Butcher anticipates minimal changes to the Indian lineup. "Bumrah will come back, and the rest will stay the same," Butcher predicted.
Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara echoed this sentiment, suggesting, "[Mohammed] Siraj and Akash Deep will play. Prasidh Krishna might make way for Bumrah. And they’ll probably retain Washington Sundar at No. 8 for the balance he offers."
Regarding England's strategy, the focus is on revitalizing their pace attack. Broad cautioned against rushing Jofra Archer or Gus Atkinson into the team without adequate match fitness. He also acknowledged Chris Woakes' struggles but highlighted his strong record at Lord’s.
"England play well at Lord’s," Broad conceded, "but this Indian attack — especially with Bumrah back — could pose a serious threat."
As the third Test approaches, the revitalized Indian pace attack, spearheaded by the likely return of Jasprit Bumrah, has placed England on high alert.
